JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (July 31, 2023) – Long-time PGA instructor Kirk Jones, a pioneer in the teaching of modern fundamental golf instruction and author of The Golf Fundamentals Model, will be hosting a series of national education seminars later this fall and early next year based on the critically acclaimed book.
The first of six three-day seminars will be held October 9-11 at Windsor Parke Golf Club in Jacksonville, Fla.
Open to PGA members and non-members, all PGA professionals in attendance will receive 24 hours of continuing education credits toward their Member Service Requirement (MSR).
“The model of most professional instructors today is very antiquated,” says Jones, a 45-year teaching veteran with a quarter-century experience conducting PGA educational seminars. “It’s having the student hit a bucket of balls, analyzing what it is they’re doing wrong, and then suggesting changes. It’s no wonder why the game is perceived by many to be too difficult and time consuming.”
Jones, a two-time North Florida PGA Section Northern Chapter Teacher of the Year, refers to this methodology and means of improvement as “digging it out of the dirt.” The Golf Fundamentals Model teaches instructors that LESS is more—that teaching the game in a “logical, effective, simple and sequential” manner, and not subjecting the student to tons of failure, not only speeds up the learning process, but also leads to lasting improvement.
“There’s a proper, logical process to teaching and learning the game of golf, just like life,” says Jones. “You have to first learn how to crawl and then stand before you can walk. If you don’t know how to make a proper, fundamental backswing and forward swing, how can you expect to do both when there is a ball there?”
The Golf Fundamentals Model is scientifically validated and based on many years of research. Endorsed by World Golf Teachers Hall of Famer, Gary Wiren, PhD, and World Golf Hall of Famer, Dennis Walters, The Golf Fundamentals Model process starts indoors, first by teaching the student how to make a one-foot putt and then progressing to a basic, one-lever chipping stroke. It’s here that the student is taught how to grip a club and also learns the proper set-up fundamentals for all full-swing shots, including posture, width of stance, ball position and distance from the ball. The correct neuromuscular patterning, or how to make a full swinging motion without a golf ball, can also be ingrained indoors.
“I like the concept of learning to make a swing before trying to hit the ball,” says Dr. Wiren, a member of six golf Halls of Fame and author of The PGA Teaching Manual. “You develop a competent or very good practice swing and then you let the ball get in the way.”
Each session will include an introduction and demonstration of The Basic Golf Fundamentals Model, and will focus on indoor/outdoor learning and skill development, as well as best “on-course practices” for improving one’s scores. Attendees will also learn how to conduct a proper physical assessment and how to use today’s modern technology (featuring FlightScope’s X3 Launch Monitor) and visible feedback in an efficient way, so as to not confuse the student. Several guest presenters are also scheduled to attend, including Dr. Chris Kopp of Premier Physical Therapy in Jacksonville, and long-time PGA Professional Mike Shannon, widely regarded as one of the top putting instructors in the world today.
“This program is designed to develop great teachers now and for future generations,” says Jones, who’s conducted more than 50,000 hours of lessons. “It’s a collaborative effort combining many years of research and the teachings of numerous Hall of Fame golf instructors. It figures to be a fun, engaging and extremely educational experience for all.”
Additional 2023 dates include November 6-8 and December 4-6, also at Golf Fundamentals Model Headquarters at Windsor Parke G.C. Dates for 2024 include January 8-10, February 5-7 and March 4-6.
All attendees are asked to bring their clubs and teaching tools. The cost for PGA members is $1,100; and for non-members, $1,400. Cost includes three lunches and all certification and facility fees.
